Friday, May 26th, 2017 Fond Object presents The Tough Shits, Brian Jabas Smith, & the Rocky Four 7pm//$5 // BYOB (unless otherwise noted) // ALL AGES
The Tough Shits are a rock and roll band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their unique sound is a sonic missive to their garage forefathers, without being strictly, just another scuzzy rock band. Their musical influences are informed of: The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Sam Cooke & The Clash. Their stylistic influences come directly from bands similar to the New York Dolls. They have shared past bills with touring bands like Jay Reatard. Pills, Thrills, Booze & Bellyaches abound as they join other garage gangsters from Philadelphia like Love City, Dark Horse And The Carousels & The Midnight Beat to develop and maintain a heavily felt local following in Philadelphia, poised to take over the world.
Brian Smith will be reading from his new book, Spent Saints and showing 11 one-minute short films based on stories in the book. Brian Smith has written for many magazines and alt-weeklies, and his fiction has appeared in a variety of literary journals. He’s an award-winning journalist, first as a staff writer and columnist at Phoenix New Times and then as an editor at Detroit’s Metro Times. Before writing full time, Smith was a songwriter who fronted rock ‘n’ roll bands Beat Angels and, before that, GAD. He has penned tunes with lots of folks, including Alice Cooper. At one point he overcame heady crystal meth and alcohol addictions. As a kid growing up in Tucson, Ariz., Smith was a national class bicycle racer. He now lives back in Tucson where he writes a regular column in the Tucson Weekly centered on unsung heroes, people on the fringes and the desolate beauty found in unlikely places. Spent Saints is his debut collection of short stories.
